The IBJJF No-Gi World Championship is the premier no-gi event on the IBJJF calendar. Held every November, it attracts competitors who prefer the fast-paced action of no-gi grappling.

No-Gi vs Gi Competition

No-gi BJJ features:

  • Faster pace without grip fighting
  • More wrestling-based attacks
  • Increased use of leg locks
  • Rashguard and shorts attire

IBJJF No-Gi Rules

Important rule differences from gi:

  • No collar or sleeve grips
  • Heel hooks legal at Brown/Black belt
  • No reaping DQ at lower belts
  • Same point system as gi

Weight Classes

Slightly different from gi divisions:

  • Rooster to Ultra Heavy
  • Same Masters age categories
  • Kids and juvenile divisions

Strategic Considerations

For no-gi success, focus on:

  1. Underhook battles
  2. Front headlock attacks
  3. Leg entanglement defense
  4. Collar tie and arm drags

The Path to Gold

With fewer grip options, no-gi rewards:

  • Superior conditioning
  • Wrestling ability
  • Submission chains
  • Positional control
